What is .htaccess files?

An .htaccess file is a plain-text configuration file that you can use to alter the settings of the web server. The .htaccess file is searched for in the same directory when the Apache web server handles an incoming client request for a file. The directives in the .htaccess file are read by Apache and override the server's global configuration if the file is present.
